Despite the fact that there hadn't been an overload of work out in the fields as the harvest was still a few weeks off, the hours of moving about under the blaring sun had Jessamyn utterly exhausted. Though most would assume that she would have adjusted to the heat by now(as she'd been working her father's land since she was little more than a toddler), having hot rays beating down on one's skin from dawn until dusk on a daily basis would drain even the most energetic people of their 'life force'; so to speak. Of course, the fact that she had been born with the caramel-colored complexion that happened to be one of District Eleven's defining features didn't really help her any as the darker shade of her skin only made her temperature rise that much more quickly when she was working. There wasn't really anything she could do about the skin she'd been born into, however, and so the light-skinned girl simply attempted to make the best of what she'd been given.
Having learned over the years that her body was able to function more efficiently when she wasn't so hot, Jess had quickly found a way to keep herself slightly cooler as she began dressing in lightweight clothes when she knew it was her turn to work out in the fields. Unfortunately today had been one of the hotter days so far this year, which meant that a fine sheen of sweat had developed over her skin during the course of the day. Sighing in relief as she heard the bell signalling that the work day had finally come to an end, Jess gathered up the tools she'd been provided with that morning before starting the rather lengthy trek back towards town. Thank heavens they finally rang that damned thing, she thought to herself tiredly, wishing that her aching feet would carry her home more quickly. I was beginning to think that they were going to have us working through the night again like they did right after the Rebellion ended. The only reason they stopped was because of the Treaty being signed.
Shivering at the mere thought of returning to that rigorous schedule, Jessamyn shook her head once to clear it of such unpleasant thoughts as the last thing she wanted was more stress on her way home. After all, the few hours she was allowed to spend with her twin Jericho and their father happened to be the favorite part of her day and she had no intentions of allowing herself to become sullen and ruin the mood of their evening. Pausing just long enough to hand off her equipment to one of the evening workers, the youngest member of the Granger family forced herself to speed her pace just a little as she wanted more than anything to get home and simply relax. Her expression lightening significantly as she saw her family's house just up the road, Jess hurried up the lane to the one bedroom shack that had always been 'home'. Pushing the door open, she couldn't help but wonder if her brother or father had managed to make it home before her; something that wasn't exactly unusual. "Jer?" she called out softly into the silence, listening to see if there was a response. "Dad? Anyone home?"

Jer was out farther in the fields than he normally worked. In the midst of all of the “reconstruction” work and rescheduling, everyone had been shifted around. It didn’t matter how close they were to their homes or the fields that their families might have had a miniscule share in, they went where the peacekeepers pointed. And then they worked, and worked, and kept working, while the sun rose up in the sky, arched overhead, and started its descent again. That part wasn’t new; Jer was used to long hours of work. With their small family, they needed every little bit of extra work they could get anyway, and they still didn’t always get enough. But it was also slightly easier with just their three mouths to feed. It was a strange position.
The bells were a godsend. Jer hadn’t even realized how long he had been out and working – it was one of the advantages of being so used to the menial labor: it all faded into one long, continuous and unending stream of consciousness. The walk back home after he packed up was similar. Right foot, left foot, right foot, left foot, right left right left. There was an incline along the path, and he could feel the burn in his legs – however used to the walk home he was – but he kept plodding along with his head down, a hand running through his hair in an attempt to help get some airflow around his scalp. His hair tended to trap in heat, and it was far from pleasant.
He actually got home not too long after his twin did, swinging an easy arm over her shoulder as he stepped through the doorway. “Worked up a sweat didn’t cha, Jess?” he teased, before just as quickly unwinding his arm, nudging his way past his sister, and heading into the small corner that counted as their “kitchen.” The water didn’t run too well out back here where most of the small homes were (but they did have running water… sometimes), but the Grangers had quickly gotten used to filling large jugs every morning, and it was out of one of these that Jer filled a cup and swallowed it down. He dipped it back into the water before holding it out to Jessamyn, and once she took it he rubbed his dampened hands together and then over his face, enjoying the cool sensation of even that little bit of water.
“Looks like dad’s going to be back late, if I beat him home. They had me way out near the fence even.” Jer leaned comfortably against the wall, rolled his neck along his shoulders, and then let his weight slump back. He was tired. No matter how used to the work they might have been, it was still exhausting, especially in heat like today’s. And now that he no longer had his momentum going, he didn’t want to move anymore. His body was content to stay right where he was – at least for a while. Maybe he’d get his second wind… whenever dinner came about. Yes, that sounded like a good idea.

Despite the fact that Jess had grown up in what was easily one of the poorest Districts of Panem, she'd always been the epitome of a happy child. Money had never been important to her like it seemed to be for all the other girls her age who dreamed of living in the Capitol and being able to have at their fingertips whatever their heart desired. As far as she was concerned, the most important thing in anyone's life should be their family and that was easily the truth for her. No matter what happened, she knew in her heart that she would find a way to make it through as long as she had her twin Jer and their father with her. The fact that her mom died just after giving birth to first Jericho and then her only made the importance spending time and being close with one's family that much stronger as the fact that she'd never even had a chance to know her own mother made it painfully obvious that life was a painfully fragile thing.
It was partially because of this that Jessamyn could never wait for the work day to end. Obviously the idea of getting out from under the blazing sun's rays after working outside from dawn until dusk sounded amazing but her way of making it through each day spent in the fields was imagining the few hours she would have with Jer and their dad once the bells sounded and they all managed to make it home. Unfortunately, her assignment today had been further out than was usual thanks to the modifications being made to their District and so it took her quite a bit longer to finally make it back to the home she shared with the two men in her life. That only made the sight that much better though, and she couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief as she pushed herself to move a little faster with what tiny amount of energy she still possessed in her tall yet slim frame. It wasn't much but the idea of getting out of the sun was too much temptation even for her.
One look around once she'd made it inside let her know that neither her father nor Jericho had made it home yet, however, and she couldn't help but wonder where their assignments had been today if she'd managed to beat them both home. They couldn't have been too much further out seeing as the fence cuts through the edge of the fields now, she noted silently, remembering how the Peacekeepers had kept everyone closer to town when they'd been working on it. I just hope they get home soon. Torn from her thoughts as an arm wrapped itself around her shoulders, Jess jumped slightly before letting a grin tug up the corners of her lips as she recognized Jer's voice instantly. "Oh shut up," she said with a laugh as she instantly felt herself relax the way she always did around her twin. "At least I don't stink like someone I know." Following Jericho into the kitchen she watched as he got himself a drink from one of the containers they'd filled that morning before accepting the one he offered her.
Letting out a sigh of irritation when Jericho informed her that it looked as if Dad was going to be late yet again, Jess couldn't believe that they him working the far end of the fields for the third night in a row. That being said, she was thoroughly surprised when her twin informed her where his assignment had been today. Jessamyn felt her eyes narrow slightly in jealousy as she realized Jericho had gotten to see the fence before her. "Seriously? You got to see the fence today? Lucky." Reverting back to childlike behavior in a way that was rather rare for her, she stuck her tongue out at him much like she'd used to when they were only five or six. The gesture was more comical than anything else though, and she quickly found herself laughing despite her attempts to remain serious. "So what was it like? I heard from a couple of the girls who worked out there last week that it's taller than most of the shacks. Any truth to that?" It wasn't often that Jess really got excited as she was usually the more serious one but, when she did, it was with genuine emotion and a gleam in her eye that let anyone who knew what to look for know that she was hanging onto their every word.
